From all of us at Along River Ridge Bed & Breakfast, we hope you are having a fun and stress-free holiday season so far…although that might be far from the truth. With Christmas only about three weeks ago, there is a good possibility you are swimming in stress, festive tentacles grabbing you and pulling you under. Sometimes it is hard to reach the surface and take a breather.
We don’t want to sound like the Grinch who stole Christmas; we simply understand the modern world we live in: a slice of life with stress on the side is unavoidable nowadays. How can it be anything less, especially with the marathon of holiday music coming from the speakers in the sky? Yeah, it’s tough, and it might be time for a vacation away from it all, so you can get your head on straight and understand the true meaning of holidays.
According to Brigid Schulte of The Washington Post, everyone should take vacation, especially around times of great stress. She writes, “Weekends are more like workends. We sleep with our smartphones. And we think vacations are for wimps. So we don’t take them. Or take work along with us if we do.”
How true. Even in times that should be great, relaxing fun, our minds are swamped with all the things that have to be done. Christmas shouldn’t be work; it should simply be. What use is a vacation or a holiday if we treat it like work? Like we are punching in our timecard and working overtime. How tedious. The world is suffering because of this attitude.
Schulte continues, “But what if taking vacation not only made you healthier and happier, as a number of studies have shown, but everyone around you? And what if everybody took vacation at the same time? Would life be better, not just for you, but for the entire society?”
These are poignant questions to ponder. Reflect on them for a moment; have them bounce in your head for a little bit like a game of racquetball. Relaxation is not only good for the individual, but also good for the community as a whole – and isn’t that what the holidays are all about? Lifting everybody’s burden and making the world a better place.
